Mayors from across the country came together in Oklahoma City for the U.S. Conference of Mayors annual fall leadership meeting (September 26, 2025).
Hi Tampa,

Last week, I joined mayors from across the country in Oklahoma City for something that felt bigger than politics. We gathered at the site of the 1995 bombing, a place that reminds us of what happens when hatred turns violent, and signed the Oklahoma City Declaration Against Political Violence (https://www.usmayors.org/2025/09/26/at-site-of-oklahoma-city-bombing-bipartisan-mayors-sign-declaration-against-political-violence/) .

I know that might sound heavy for a Monday morning email, but here’s the simple truth: political violence has no place in our democracy, our neighborhoods, or our city. Period.

What we pledged is pretty straightforward (and frankly, just good common sense):
* Treat people like human beings, even when we disagree.
* Stand up for facts, not fear.
* Talk with one another, not at one another.
* Keep compromise and civility on the table, always.

That’s how I try to lead here in Tampa. We don’t all see the world the same way, but we do share this city, these streets, this future. I signed this declaration because I believe Tampa can keep leading by example.

As we head into another week, remember, Tampa’s at its best when we show up for one another with respect, and maybe even a smile 😊.

Mayor’s Food Truck Fiesta

Participating food trucks: Mr Bulgogi, Salsa My Love, Brisket & Beyond, Keilbasa Bus, and Tutty Frutty.

Saturday Session

Join the next Saturday Session (https://www.tampa.gov/SaturdaySession) on October 4 from 9 am – 2 pm at the City Center at Hanna Avenue! Attendees will get the latest information on the City budget, programs, grants, and ways to strengthen your neighborhood. This interactive session is built for both current and aspiring neighborhood leaders. Free lunch will be provided.

Centro Ybor Fall Fest

Fall has arrived! On October 4 from 10:30 am – 1:30 pm, Centro Ybor (https://www.tampa.gov/events/centro-ybor-fall-fest-pumpkin-patch/173746) is celebrating with a free community pumpkin patch, fall vendor marker, and all the seasonal vibes. The first 50 guests can take a pumpkin home.

Beats on the Street

On October 4 from 3 pm – 9 pm, attend Beats on the Street (https://www.waterstreettampa.com/experience/beats-on-the-street?date=2025-10-04) , where the vibrant streets of the Water Street Tampa neighborhood will come alive with the electrifying sounds of local talented musicians. This neighborhood-wide event is free and open to the public.

Faith and Blue

Calling all faith-based organizations! Join the Tampa Police Department’s Faith and Blue (https://www.tampa.gov/events/faith-and-blue/172846) event on October 4 from 6 pm – 9 pm at Water Works Park. It will be a night where law enforcement, community members, and faith-based leaders come together to celebrate an evening of fellowship.
Hispanic Heritage Month Lunch & Learn

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with us at our next Lunch & Learn event on October 9 at 12 pm at the City Center at Hanna Avenue. The discussion will dive deep into the Spanish influence within Tampa’s architecture. Free lunch will be provided (while supplies last). 31st Annual Tampa Police Memorial Run

The Tampa Police Memorial Committee will host the 31st Annual Tampa Police Memorial Run (https://www.tampa.gov/events/31st-annual-tampa-police-memorial-run/172006) on October 11 at 8 am. The run honors fallen Tampa Police officers and celebrates the spirit of community. The event typically features a 5K run, a 1-mile fun run/walk, food, music, door prizes, and various activities. Proceeds benefit the Tampa Police Museum, Memorial Scholarship Program, charitable donations, and improvements to the Tampa Police Memorial Monument.

37th Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration

The 37th Annual City of Tampa Hispanic Heritage Celebration (https://www.tampa.gov/hispanic-heritage-committee) will be hosted on October 14 at 11 am at Tampa Theatre. Riverwalk Trick or Treat

On October 25 from 4 pm – 7 pm, join the Friends of the Riverwalk for the 9th Annual Riverwalk Trick or Treat (https://www.tampa.gov/events/riverwalk-trick-or-treat/171526) . This free community event invites children in costume and their families to come and trick or treat along the Tampa Riverwalk from Cotanchobee Park to the Tampa Convention Center. There will be over 50 treat stations, a pumpkin patch, costume contests, food trucks, photo stations, flash mobs, and a Halloween Movie in the Park event at 7 pm in Cotanchobee Park.

Meet Steve Porter, an Automotive Equipment Operator II in the Solid Waste Department. He has worked for the City of Tampa for over 20 years, and he most enjoys working with his colleagues that have turned into second family.

What do you like to do in your free time? I love fishing - wherever there is water, I’m there!

What is your favorite restaurant in Tampa? La Teresita and D&D Delights. I love their steak sandwiches.

What is your favorite meal to cook? I love grilling steak, ribs, and chicken. It’s a relaxing pastime.

What reality show would you want to be on? It's not a reality show, but Dragon Ball Z.
