35th Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration

The City of Tampa & the Mayor’s Hispanic Heritage Committee invites the public to the 35th Annual Mayor’s Hispanic Heritage Celebration (https://www.tampa.gov/events/35th-annual-hispanic-heritage-celebration/127261) on September 27 at 11 am at the Tampa Theatre. There will be live entertainment and free lunch for the first 200 guests.

“Growing Your Water Wise Garden” Workshop

Grow your garden rain or shine! Check out the free, virtual “Growing Your Water Wise Garden (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/florida-friendly-landscapingtm-growing-your-water-wise-garden-tickets-706699496217?aff=oddtdtcreator) ” workshop on September 21 at 11 am to learn how to use Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ principles to create a garden oasis designed to thrive in Tampa.

Grant Park Neighborhood Emergency Preparedness Outreach Event

Live, work or play in the Grant Park community? Stop by the New Testament Worship Center on September 21 (https://www.tampa.gov/events/grant-park-neighborhood-emergency-preparedness-outreach-event/127271) at 6 pm to learn about an interactive program that trains and prepares residents to respond to emergencies in their neighborhoods. The first 20 attendees get free Italian Ice from Luckys.

Cal Dickson Tennis Center Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

On September 26 at 10:30 am, join Mayor Jane Castor, Tampa City Council, City staff, and local community members for the Cal Dickson Tennis Center Ribbon Cutting Ceremony (4011 W Watrous Ave) and celebration of the new playground, with pre-school activities to follow.

Breaking the Silence: A Community Forum on Depression & Suicide Prevention

Tampa teens, their parents, and all interested individuals are invited to a free, virtual forum (https://www.tampa.gov/events/breaking-silence-community-forum-depression-and-suicide-prevention/127266) on depression and suicide awareness and prevention on September 27 at 6 pm. The event is sponsored by the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council, a program of the City of Tampa that allows local teens to develop their leadership skills and apply them through various service projects and workshops. Panelists Mrs. Susannah Robinson, Dr. Noelle De La Cruz, and Crisis Center of Tampa Bay representatives, Ms. Lindsay Everest and Ms. Isabel Ellison, will discuss the importance of depression and suicide awareness, share personal experiences, and identify available resources to support those in crisis. Audience members will have the opportunity to ask each of the panelists questions directly in an open discussion.

Southeast Seminole Heights Flooding Relief Project Update Meeting

The Southeast Seminole Heights Flooding Relief Project (https://seminoleheightsstormwater.com/) is well underway. On September 27 at 6 pm, join a community update meeting at the Seminole Garden Center to hear a brief presentation on construction progress, challenges to date, & future work - followed by a Q&A session.

29th Annual Tampa Police Memorial Run

Mayor Jane Castor, Chief Lee Bercaw, and the Tampa Police Department invite the public to participate in the 29th Annual Tampa Police Memorial 5K/1-Mile Run-Walk (https://www.tampa.gov/events/29th-annual-tampa-police-memorial-run/125086) on October 14 at 8 am. Run or walk the race, or just come out to cheer on the participants. Proceeds from the event benefit the Police Museum, Memorial Scholarship Program, charitable donations, and Tampa Police Memorial Monument maintenance.

The Contract Administration Deparment is hiring a Chief Contract Engineer (https://www.jobapscloud.com/Tampa/sup/bulpreview.asp?b=&R1=230609&R2=511810&R3=001) to oversee the preparation & coordination of contracts and related documents for professional planning, design, and construction services for Capital Improvement Projects (CIPs). Applicants should have a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and must be registered as a Professional Engineer in the State of Florida, with five years of progressively responsible related experience, including three years of supervisory experience.

Meet Celeste Gibbons-Peoples, a Certified Senior Procurement Analyst in the Purchasing Department. She has worked for the City of Tampa for almost 38 years and enjoys her position because she gets to work with staff from every department.

What do you like to do in your free time? Free time? What is that!? I like to travel, spend time with family and friends, work in my community, and discover Tampa. As I’m born and raised here in Tampa, a lot has changed.

What’s your favorite movie? My favorite movie is “Imitation of Life” (the 1959 version).

What’s your favorite holiday? Christmas (my birthday is two days after).

What is your favorite meal to cook and why? Anything with Pasta because it is quick and easy and because I finally have my mom’s tomato sauce recipe as close to hers as I care to get.
