Lifeguard Rookie School 2025

Join the Tampa Parks and Recreation Aquatics Team at Lifeguard Rookie School (https://www.tampa.gov/parks-and-recreation/activities-recreation/aquatics/lifeguard-jobs) . It’s free and no registration is needed. Just show up on January 13 at 5 pm and be ready to swim! Pass two lifeguard prerequisite tests, and you’ll advance to the lifeguard class.

Tampa Veterans Job Fair

The RecruitMilitary Job Fair allows job seekers with military experience to meet with recruiters from local and national companies. Gasparilla Children's Parade

One of the most popular attractions in Tampa, the Ashley Children's Gasparilla Parade presented by Chick-fil-A (https://gasparillapiratefest.com/childrens/) will be held on January 18 with events running from 12 - 7:30 pm. Tens of thousands of spectators are expected to line the streets of Bayshore Boulevard to watch. Drop Savers Poster Contest

The 2025 Drop Savers Poster Contest is now accepting entries. K - 12 students can show off their artistic skills by creating a poster about the importance of water conservation. Teachers, learn more information at tampa.gov/DropSavers (https://www.tampa.gov/DropSavers) . Submission deadline is February 15.

One.Network

The City of Tampa is transitioning to One.Network (https://us.one.network/) to more efficiently update GPS providers (Google, Apple, Waze, etc) of road closures and traffic updates. Sign up for geo-fenced alerts in your specific area at one.network/public. Plus, check out the new & improved Road Closure Map at tampa.gov/RoadClosureMap.

Fix It Fast

The City of Tampa Fix It Fast program focuses on delivering timely road repairs within 72 hours after a report is filed. In 2024, the City of Tampa Fix It Fast team filled over 6,500 potholes, despite shifting roles during hurricane recovery. To report potholes in your neighborhood or on your commute, visit tampa.gov/FixItFastor call 813-274-FAST(3278).

20^th Annual 3R’s Art & Poetry Contest

All Tampa young artists and poets are encouraged to submit an art or poetry piece, inspired by environmental stewardship, into our 20^th Annual 3R’s Art & Poetry Contest. Not only will the winner have their piece displayed on a recycling collection truck for one year, the winner will also receive four free tickets to ZooTampa at Lowry Park. Natural Resources Advisory Committee

The City of Tampa is seeking arborists, developers, businesses, and neighborhood representatives that are passionate about trees to join the newly-formed Natural Resources Advisory Committee. The committee will serve to advance and protect the benefits of Tampa’s urban forest. See details and qualifications at tampa.gov/NRAC. Apply by January 15.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Join us at the annual MLK Jr Day Parade (http://mlkjrparade.com) on January 20 to celebrate the life and legacy of the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The parade starts at 12 pm at Cuscaden Park (North 15th St & East 21st Ave).

Note: City of Tampa offices will be closed on January 20, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. There will be no residential trash or recycling collection that day and regularly scheduled collection will resume on January 21.

Rental & Move-In Assistance Program

The City of Tampa Rental & Move-In Assistance Program is now open. Every Tuesday & Thursday, forty eligible applications will be accepted until the funding limit is reached. Applications are posted to tampa.gov/ (https://www.tampa.gov/housing-and-community-development/rental-move-in-assistance) RMAP (https://www.tampa.gov/housing-and-community-development/rental-move-in-assistance) . In 2024, the program assisted more than 900 households and awarded over $4.5 million.

Job of the Week

The City of Tampa is hiring a Drafting Technician III (https://www.jobapscloud.com/Tampa/sup/bulpreview.asp?b=&R1=250102&R2=504310&R3=001) to perform architectural or civil drafting assignments involving portrayal of basic engineering ideas and information through drawings. Work is of more than average difficulty and is reviewed to ensure that proper graphic portrayal techniques, methods, and procedures are used, as well as for neatness, clarity, accurate portrayal of the design, and inclusion of adequate information for the intended purpose.

Meet Tim Spearman, the City of Tampa's new Small Business Navigator! He has worked for the City of Tampa for about one month, and loves that his role allows him to connect with the community directly to provide resources.

What do you like to do in your free time? I love learning to cook new food dishes or anything outdoors like boating, fishing, hiking, trail rides, etc.

Where’s your favorite place in Tampa? Upper Tampa Bay Park. Very relaxing and you can kayak with dolphins and manatees. The dolphins steal your fish though if you're fishing!

What is your favorite meal to cook? Blue crab fried rice. It's my go to after going crabbing in the Gulf.

What is your dream vacation? Pullman Maldives Maamutaa. I think everyone would like to try out an underwater hotel resort.

What are you reading right now? The Gift of Adversity by Norman Rosenthal.
