The City of Tampa Black History Committee, Inc. hosted another incredible annual Black History Month Celebration at the Tampa Convention Center last week. Special thanks to Keynote Speaker Kiva Williams of the Mahogany Kids Fine Arts Foundation for sharing her experiences and wisdom.

eBike Voucher Program

The eBike Voucher Program (http://www.tampa.gov/ebike) is back –
providing Tampa residents with an opportunity to receive a $1,000 - $3,000 discount toward purchasing a new eBike. The program seeks to help residents overcome some of the existing barriers to eBike ownership, but also provide access to reliable transportation to jobs, promote sustainable transportation, and improve the City’s carbon footprint. Applications will be accepted from March 1 – 15.

Join the City of Tampa and participating local bike shops for an opportunity to test an eBike. Helmets and waivers to ride the bicycles will be available on site:
* March 1 from 6 pm – 8 pm: Ragan Park (1200 E. Lake Ave.)
* March 5 from 6 pm – 8 pm: Al Lopez Park (4810 N. Himes Ave.)
* March 13 from 6 pm – 8 pm: Copeland Park (11001 N. 15th St.)
* March 14 from 6 pm – 8 pm: Ballast Point Park (5300 Interbay Blvd.)


Black Love Film Series

There is just one showing left in the Black Love Film Series (https://tampatheatre.org/movie-categories/black-love/) , featuring the film “Daughters of the Dust” on February 25 at 3 pm. The series features films chosen in collaboration with the City of Tampa’s Community Engagement & Partnerships Department that explore stories centered around the theme of “Faith, Food & Family” as told by Black filmmakers and diverse casts.

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) Community Input Meetings

Join the City of Tampa Planning Department to discuss the future of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in our city. Participants will learn more about existing ADUs, followed by an open discussion. Attendees can attend one or both sessions:
* February 22 at 6 pm: Spring Hill Community Center (1000 E. Eskimo Ave
* March 12 at 6 pm: City Center at Hanna Avenue (2555 E. Hanna Ave)

Bridges to Business: Vendor Certification Session

Do you own a catering service or food truck? Attend Bridges to Business (https://www.tampa.gov/BTBTour) on February 26 from 2 pm – 5pm at the City Center at Hanna Avenue (2555 E Hanna Ave) to learn how you can partner with the City on upcoming events. This event seeks to bring city services to the neighborhoods in an effort to connect owners with information & business opportunities. The program is designed for minority, women-owned, or small businesses interested in becoming certified with the City of Tampa or any business wishing to register as vendors.

Tampa Soulwalk Cookbook Deadline

The deadline to submit a recipe in the Tampa Soulwalk Cookbook (https://www.tampa.gov/soulwalk) is February 29. The City of Tampa’s Soulwalk Cookbook team is seeking the participation of residents of color to submit recipes, snippets of memories, profiles of people and businesses, and other notes about the preparation and consumption of food. Put the final garnish on your favorite dish and submit now for a chance to be featured.

Drop Savers Poster Contest

The Tampa Water Department and Hillsborough County Water Resources invites all K-12 students in Hillsborough County to participate in our annual Drop Savers Water Conservation Poster Contest (https://www.tampa.gov/water/outreach/drop-savers-poster-contest) . In this contest, students must create a poster that portrays a water conservation idea in a slogan and/or drawing form. Submission deadline is March 1.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping™: Growing Your Water-Wise Garden

Grow your garden rain or shine! On February 22 at 11 am, join the Tampa Water Department for a free, virtual workshop (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/florida-friendly-landscapingtm-growing-your-water-wise-garden-tickets-788227749417?aff=oddtdtcreator) about using Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ principles to create a garden oasis designed to thrive in Tampa. Now Hiring Lifeguards

Are you looking for an opportunity that helps you build skills, develop leadership, and gain marketable job qualities? Each summer season, we employ more than 90 lifeguards of all ages. Candidates must be at least 15 years old and successfully complete the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification Course including First Aid/CPR/AED. Each year, volunteers paint the homes of the low-income, elderly residents of Tampa - uplifting spirits, relieving burdens, & beautifying our neighborhoods. Seniors on a fixed income or disabled persons who live in and own their home in Tampa and/or veterans are encouraged to apply.

The Tampa Convention Center is hiring a Chief Maintenance Engineer (https://www.jobapscloud.com/Tampa/sup/bulpreview.asp?b=&R1=240201&R2=001285&R3=001) to perform and oversee general maintenance and repair at the facility. Duties may include completing performance appraisals, recommending hiring, promotions and disciplinary actions, scheduling work projects, and formulating work methods.

Julian Fernandez
Meet Julian Fernandez, Recreation Leader II in the Parks & Recreation Department. He has worked for the City of Tampa for over 5 years and enjoys that he is able to be a part of several committees to serve the after-schoolers and the community. He especially loves being on the social media committee to take photos & post for the department.

What do you like to do in your free time? In my free time, I like to go places that have excitement - like Topgolf, Main Event, and bowling.

What is your dream vacation? My dream vacation is to go to Japan. I have some family I never met and I want to see them before it’s too late.

What is your favorite holiday? My favorite holiday is Christmas. Everything about the holiday fills me with joy: the lights, the gifts, the decorations, being with family, and snow. It feels like what life should be like this all around.

What is your favorite restaurant in Tampa? I love Eddie and Sam’s NY Pizza in downtown Tampa, as it’s my favorite place since not only is it the best pizza, but the view of the city is great.
