Mayor Jane Castor’s Tree Giveaway

All City of Tampa residents are invited to Mayor Jane's Tree Giveaway (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/mayor-janes-tree-giveaway-tickets-870950033997) , a special initiative to enrich our community's green spaces and promote sustainability. 13th Annual Tampa Firefighters 5K

On April 13 at 8 am, join the 13th Annual Tampa Firefighters 5K (https://runsignup.com/Race/FL/Tampa/tampafirefighters) , where 100% of the proceeds benefit Camp Hopetake, a week-long summer camp for previously burned children of all ages. Runners can run either a 5K or a 1 Mile Run/Walk.

Southeast Seminole Heights Construction Update Community Meeting

Seminole Heights residents are encouraged to join a community update meeting on April 16 at 6 pm at the City Center at Hanna Avenue regarding the Southeast Seminole Heights Flooding Relief Project. 20th Annual Tampa Bay Fair Housing Symposium

The City of Tampa Human Rights Office is proud to host the 20th Annual Tampa Bay Fair Housing Symposium (https://members.pinellasrealtor.org/events/Details/20th-annual-tampa-bay-fair-housing-symposium-1052020) on April 17 from 8:30 am – 3:45 pm to promote inclusivity in housing practices. Tampa Riverfest

Tampa Riverfest (https://thetampariverwalk.com/events/riverfest.html) is a two-day, free community event - returning May 3 & 4, spanning the entire length of the Riverwalk including several parks and features family-friendly activities and events showcasing Tampa's cultural institutions, local musicians, and restaurants. The festival also includes Taste of Riverwalk on Friday night and Taco Fest on Saturday. There is also a full concert series of regional and local bands on the main stage in Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and a balloon glow at sunset on both nights. Other activities include a wiener dog derby, a lantern parade, yoga, a water ski show, and a paddle invasion.

2024 Latinos Unidos Luncheon

Hosted by the Mayor’s Hispanic Advisory Council, the Latinos Unidos Luncheon (https://www.tampa.gov/hispanic-advisory-council/latinos-unidos-luncheon) on May 8 from 12 pm – 1:30 pm is dedicated to opening new doors of opportunity for Latino youth in our community. It highlights the influence and economic impact of Hispanics in the United States with an inspiring keynote speaker and recognition of a community leader and focuses on raising scholarship dollars to remove critical barriers to postsecondary education for Latino youth.

New Online Tool: Economic Dashboard

Tampa is changing rapidly, and understanding our local economic environment can be a challenge. That's why we launched the new Economic Dashboard (https://www.tampa.gov/economy) to provide a snapshot of the economic vitality of our city and the region. It aggregates reliable private and publicly available data sources like the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics to report impartial data on a quarterly basis.

SWEEP Program

Doing some Spring cleaning? If you have bulky items to get rid of (ie furniture, mattresses, appliances, etc), our SWEEP (https://www.tampa.gov/SWEEP) Program may help you get rid of them for free. Tampa residents can dispose of bulky waste curbside during their assigned week within the year.

Tampa Convention Center Nominated for Best Convention Center in the Southeast

Tampa Convention Center has been nominated for Best Convention Center (Regional – Southeast U.S.) in the prestigious Stella Awards for the second year in a row. The center won the gold medal, the top honor, for this category in 2023. The public is invited to vote here (https://stellaawards.secure-platform.com/a/gallery/rounds/15/details/14032) until May 3. Every vote is an opportunity to win one of 15 American Express gift cards.

Job of the Week

The Solid Waste Department is hiring a Waste-to-Energy Plant Engineer (https://www.jobapscloud.com/Tampa/sup/bulpreview.asp?b=&R1=240319&R2=387405&R3=001) to perform a variety of engineering functions, project planning, design, and oversight, as well as plant operational studies and assessments. This position will also require frequent participation in work overseeing numerous activities related to the safe, proper, and efficient operation of the waste-to-energy plant, in accordance with City policies, procedures, and standards.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Serena Brydon

Meet Serena Brydon, a Real Estate Contract Specialist in the Development & Growth Management Division. She has worked for the City of Tampa for 20 years and she has most enjoyed working with closely her colleagues within the Real Estate Department, but also other staff all across the City.

What do you like to do in your free time? I belong to a group called the Gator Baiter’s Adventure club, along with other City employees, friends and family, we’ve had many adventures, white water rafting, kayaking the boundary waters of Minnesota, yearly camping in Mayo, Florida. Many wonderful experiences and hopefully many more in the future. Shoutout to Ann Gray! Also, anything I do with my children and grandchildren, there are never any dull moments.

What’s your favorite type of music? I absolutely love music! I was brought up on Bluegrass. I love classic rock, 70’s, 80’s and most other genres. My grandkids have introduced me to more current music as well. Love attending concerts with my son.

What’s your favorite meal to cook? I like to make Pizza Casserole, a family favorite when the whole crew gets together.

What are you reading right now? I love to read, Grisham, King, Brown and Follett to name a few. I enjoy reading/watching true stories and bios. I also make time to do crossword puzzles.

SPECIAL FEATURE
Did you know the Wastewater Department has four large pumping stations located in each quadrant of the City? These pumping stations are in Ybor City, Downtown, east Tampa and South Tampa. Each receives millions of gallons of wastewater daily from 224 smaller pumping stations located throughout the City and parts of Hillsborough County. These four pumping stations all have standby generators on site that will provide a reliable and sustainable source of power during electrical outages.
