City Offices Closed for New Years Day Holiday

City of Tampa offices will be closed on January 1 in observance of the New Years Day holiday. There are no changes to the residential solid waste collection schedule (https://www.tampa.gov/solid-waste) .

Natural Resources Advisory Committee

The City of Tampa is seeking arborists, developers, businesses, and neighborhood representatives that are passionate about trees to join the newly-formed Natural Resources Advisory Committee. 2nd Annual Dia de Reyes Celebration (Three Kings Day)

The holiday festivities continue with the 2nd Annual City of Tampa Dia de Reyes Celebration (Three Kings Day) on January 4 at 11 am – 2 pm at Al Lopez Park. There will be food, entertainment & community resources, and presents for children under 12 years of age accompanied by an adult, while supplies last.

Saturday Session

Class is back in session on January 11 at 9 am. Join the next Saturday Session to learn how to protect your information from the experts at the Tampa Police Department and take advantage of free document shredding services from Tampa Bay Federal Credit Union. See tampa.gov/SaturdaySession (https://www.tampa.gov/SaturdaySession ) to register and review the list of permitted items to shred.

20th Annual 3R’s Art & Poetry Contest

All Tampa young artists and poets are encouraged to submit an art or poetry piece inspired by environmental stewardship to our 20th Annual 3R’s Art & Poetry Contest. Submissions are due February 7. Not only will the winner have their piece displayed on a recycling collection truck for one year, but the winner will also receive four free tickets to ZooTampa at Lowry Park! One.Network

The City of Tampa is transitioning to One.Network (https://us.one.network/) to more efficiently update GPS providers (Google, Apple, Waze, etc) of road closures and traffic updates. Sign up for geo-fenced alerts in your specific area at one.network/public. Plus, check out the new & improved Road Closure Map at tampa.gov/RoadClosureMap.

Job of the Week

The Parks & Recreation Department is hiring a Landscape Architect II (https://www.jobapscloud.com/Tampa/sup/bulpreview.asp?b=&R1=241212&R2=102200&R3=001) to prepare landscape architectural drawings for improvements to department lands and facilities, public rights-of-way, and other city properties. Applicants should be registered in the State of Florida as a Landscape Architect or be registered registration in another state with the ability to obtain Florida registration within six months of employment.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Meet Sandra “Sammy” Williams, an Executive Aide in the Logistics & Asset Management Division. She has worked for the City of Tampa for over four years. She loves that her role offers the opportunity to work with colleagues and leadership teams to accomplish departmental objectives and goals.

What do you like to do in your free time? In my free time, I enjoy gospel singing and crocheting/looming, not at the same time, however.

Where’s your favorite restaurant in Tampa? My favorite restaurant in Tampa is the ‘Sacred Pepper’. I love the ambiance about as much as I love the food, and service.

What’s your favorite holiday? My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving (which should be every day) is a time when you reflect on what you have been given, what you accomplish, and how far you’ve come by grace, so much so that you have no reason or room to complain.

What are you reading right now? I am reading a book called "The Spirit of a Leader” by author Miles Monroe.

What's your dream vacation? My dream vacation is to visit the bungalows of Tahiti. The tranquility of being surrounded by only crystal-clear waters.

What's your favorite meal to cook? My most favorite meal to prepare is oxtails with pigeon peas and rice. The reason it is my favorite is, I have my father’s recipe and we would make it together.

FEMA has opened a new Disaster Recovery Center in Tampa! Get on-the-spot help with applications and appealing decision letters. Uber ride vouchers are available at ** tampa.gov/RecoveryRides (https://www.tampa.gov/RecoveryRides)
. The site is open from 7 am – 7 pm Monday – Saturday until January 7.
Despite having to shift roles for hurricane recovery efforts, the City of Tampa’s in-house paving team paved more than 42 lane miles in 2024. With a new paver & recently expanded team, the Mobility Department looks forward to doubling their paving efforts in 2025 and beyond!

Mayor Jane Castor once again partnered with OnBikes to deliver over 120 free bikes to deserving children in the Temple Crest and Sulphur Springs neighborhoods. "Caroling with Castor" has become a beloved tradition for our Parks & Recreation staff and families.
