City staff and community members gathered at MacDill 48, the City of Tampa’s newest public park that serves 3 major roles: 1) Helps alleviate flooding by storing stormwater runoff, 2) Improves water quality within Hillsborough Bay by treating stormwater runoff and removing pollutants, and 3) Provides a huge passive park with a 1-mile walking trail and natural beauty at every turn.

South Howard Flood Relief Project Public Meeting

The Stormwater Department and engineering experts are hosting a public meeting today (November 18) at 6 pm to discuss theSouth Howard Flood Relief Project (https://www.tampa.gov/project/sw40007) . The purpose of this project is to design and build a major stormwater system aimed at improving drainage and reducing flooding along South Howard Avenue and adjacent neighborhoods. Residents and business owners in Parkland Estates, Palma Ceia Pines, along South Howard and adjacent neighborhoods are encouraged to attend this informative meeting – hosted at Bayshore Baptist Church Fellowship Hall (3111 West Morrison Avenue).

Tampa Night Out Fall Festival

Job of the Week

The Water Department is hiring three Water Treatment Plant Operator Trainees (https://www.tampa.gov/jobs) to operate and maintain process control equipment, perform safety inspections, and complete basic water treatment duties. Tasks are of average difficulty and include inspecting and performing basic preventative maintenance and minor repairs on water treatment and pumping equipment.

Meet John Mayer, Building Maintenance Supervisor IV in the Logistics & Asset Management Department. He has worked for the City of Tampa for 30 years. He loves leading his team “to believe that we will overcome any challenge presented and share in our victory. I also love seeing my team members develop and achieve their own successes. I always tell them to be proud of your accomplishments because in our business you can just drive around our City and see your success admiring the things you’ve accomplished.”

What’s something unique about your position that others wouldn’t know? As the electrical supervisor for Facility Management, I’m involved in many unique and fun projects that provide a positive image for the City of Tampa. I work with various City departments to develop plans and manage well thought out installations for many color changing LED lighting systems everyone enjoys including Riverwalk, Curtis Hixon Park, Old City Hall, the Bridges, Sulphur Springs Tower, Channelside Drive Tunnel, Harbour Island Bridge with more to come.

What do you like to do in your free time? I enjoy spending time with my adult son Daniel who’s a paramedic and listening to his work adventures. I also enjoy seeing my grandsons Jackson and Charlie developing so well knowing my daughter Yuri and her husband Sam do such a great job. I also like the outdoors visiting parks and fishing from the Skyway pier but mostly when it’s cooler outside.

What’s your favorite restaurant in Tampa? My favorite restaurant in Tampa is 4 Rivers Smokehouse because they do barbeque right! Their beef brisket, all their sides and even their deserts are all delicious.

What reality show would you want to be on? I would like to be on Gordan Ramsay’s Uncharted as a guest to accompany him on some of his world travel adventures finding special ingredients and admiring the complexity of other cultures. There’s so much to learn in this world and if you seek it you may be amazed at what you find.

What's your favorite meal to cook? I like to cook Chicken Marsala because it’s delicious if done correctly in a rich savory marsala wine sauce and I like to use portobella mushrooms and pair it with a side like asparagus or other vegetables.

What's your dream vacation? Hawaii but It’s not really a dream vacation because I been there before but I still love it! I have friends that live there and always enticing me to go back and visit. I love the tropical environment, the fishing, seafood and surf.
