Hey Tampa,
This week always brings me back to where I was on September 11, 2001. I was serving as a Tampa police officer, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with my brothers and sisters in law enforcement, as we all watched the unthinkable unfold. I remember so well how quickly firefighters, police officers, and everyday Americans ran toward danger with nothing but courage in their hearts – and how united our country was.
Here in Tampa, that spirit is alive every single day. Our Fire Department will once again host its annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony this week. It’s an important moment to honor those we lost, but also to lift up the first responders and military members who keep us safe right now.
Tampa is home to one of the largest military communities in the nation, active duty service members, veterans, and their families who give so much of themselves for our country. We are proud that they choose to call Tampa home, and we are grateful beyond words for their service and sacrifice.
As Mayor, I have the privilege of working with both our police officers and firefighters, two professions that define bravery, and as a fellow Tampa neighbor, I have the privilege of standing beside all of you as we continue to show what it means to be united, resilient, and Tampa Strong. May this week be a reminder of the strength we share as a community and the good we can create together.
- Mayor Jane
