Cutting the ribbon at the grand opening of Marquee Square Apartments in East Tampa.
Hi Tampa,

This past week brought two powerful reminders of what’s possible when we stay focused on one of our city’s most pressing challenges: affordable housing.

We cut the ribbon on Marquee Square (https://www.marqueesquare.com/) , a beautiful new community on the former Fun-Lan Drive-In site in East Tampa. For working families, seniors, and neighbors living on modest incomes, these 354 apartments offer a chance to build stability close to jobs and opportunity. Just a few years ago, that site was a vacant lot. Today, it’s proof of how smart investment and strong partnerships can drastically improve the lives of fellow Tampanians.

At Robles Park Village (https://www.tampaha.org/robles-park-village-redevelopment) , demolition is officially now underway, a major step in transforming one of Tampa’s oldest public housing communities into modern, mixed-income homes. The project, led by the Tampa Housing Authority, will add hundreds of new units, preserve affordability, and honor the cultural legacy of this long-standing Tampa neighborhood.

These milestones couldn’t come at a more important time. Our city’s most recent Housing Needs Assessment (https://www.tampa.gov/document/housing-needs-assessment-data-report-145616) makes one thing clear: Tampa’s housing supply, especially for low-income households, is in high demand with limited supply. This is a trend we must change. With our population projected to grow by 60,000 more residents by 2045, we can’t afford to wait.

Projects like Marquee Square and Robles Park may be just the start, but they set a precedent. They prove what’s possible when we work together, public and private partners, united by a shared goal: to get more people into homes they can afford.

We’ve got more work to do, but we’re on the right track.

Onward,

Mayor Jane

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Gabriela Taylor
Meet Gabriela Taylor, Events Coordinator I in the Parks & Recreation Department. She has worked for the City for 10 years, and she loves that no two days are the same in her role. She gets to interact with both residents and several City departments to make events possible.

What's one of the craziest days you’ve had on the job?

Doing post-hurricane clean-up in the parks last year was really wild. Seeing how high the water was on the Riverwalk and finding fish on the grass at Julian B. Lane Park was crazy. Just glad it was a fish and not a gator!

What’s your favorite restaurant in Tampa?

We are so lucky to have SO many great restaurants in our backyard! I love trying new places, but I definitely have my go-tos: Foodys Restaurant, TBBC, La Hacienda Mexicana, and the Columbia.

What’s your favorite meal to cook?

I like making arepas because it reminds me of my Venezuelan roots. They are super easy to make, and you can eat them with anything!

What’s your favorite music artist?

I like all kinds of music- from hip-hop to country, but I think I’m an emo kid at heart. I love Taking Back Sunday, Paramore, Panic! At the Disco, and Twenty-One Pilots.
