On National Purple Heart Day, Mayor Jane Castor, Tampa City Council, Senator Jay Collins, local Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapters, representatives from Florida Gold Star Families, and community members gathered to raise the Purple Heart flag above City Hall and reflect on the bravery of those who have fought for our country. Their courage will never be forgotten.

Comprehensive Plan Update Meetings

We're updating the Tampa Comprehensive Plan and need your feedback. Several major updates are nearing completion and scheduled to move forward to public hearings in the Fall. Construction Job Fair for Fair Oaks Recreational Complex

Skanska and Strategist are hosting a job fair (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/job-opportunities-at-east-tampa-rec-project-at-fair-oaks-park-tickets-952751163377) on August 15 from 6 – 9 pm at the existing Fair Oaks Park Community Center, located at 5019 North 34th Street. Subcontractors who were already chosen to work on the East Tampa Recreational Complex at Fair Oaks project will be on site and ready to connect with qualified individuals seeking work as part of this transformative project in the East Tampa community.

eBike Voucher Program

The eBike Voucher Program application window opens August 16 at 8 am. The program seeks to provide qualified & approved Tampa residents with an upfront discount towards the purchase of a new eBike from a participating local bike shop. Before you apply, take one for a test ride at one of four upcoming eBike rodeo events on August 19, 21, 26 or 28. Visit tampa.gov/ebike for details.

Tampa Bay Comic Convention

Expect increased traffic near the Tampa Convention Center on August 23 - 25 due to the Tampa Bay Comic Convention (https://www.tampa.gov/events/tampa-bay-comic-convention/145071) . As a family-friendly and fan-owned comic book convention, the Tampa Bay Comic Convention offers comic books, panels, performances, toys, cosplay, art, and more.

Free Homebuyer Workshop

On August 24, join R.E.A.C.H and Tampa Housing Authority for a free in-person Homebuyer Workshop (https://www.tampa.gov/events/free-8hr-person-homebuyer-workshop/153686) . Attendees will learn about securing down payment assistance and receive expert advice from HUD-approved counselors.

Labor Day

In observance of the Labor Day holiday, all City of Tampa offices will be closed on September 2. No trash, recycling, or yard waste collection will take place that day.

Tampa Forward: Building Tomorrow Together

The City of Tampa has launched Tampa Forward: Building Tomorrow Together (https://www.tampa.gov/development-coordination/tampa-updates-its-land-development-code) , a two-year project to update the City’s Land Development Code (LDC) - the set of regulations that govern how land can be used and developed in the city. Tampa is growing quickly and these updates to the code will make sure we grow strategically. We need your feedback to move forward. Take the survey at tampa.gov/tampaforward and attend the kickoff meeting on September 16 at 7 pm, located at City Center at Hanna Avenue (2555 E Hanna Ave). There is also a virtual option.

Capital Improvement Projects Viewer

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Meet Charles Barnes, a Transportation Tech III in the Mobility Division. He has worked for the City of Tampa for eight years and enjoys that his position helps the public through communication and education.

What’s something unique about your job that others wouldn’t know? Our job here works with CCTV cameras and other programs to help develop the signal timings for intersections around Tampa. We work to help the traffic flow during special events as well as for when VIPs need an escort. We work with other entities to make sure we resolve problem areas. This position works with the Hillsborough County Sherriff’s Office, to make sure the school crossing guards and the children walking to school are safe. We work with venders to make sure our system and equipment are up to date and functioning properly. We also get to work with the public to help their commutes become more efficient this includes pedestrian, bicyclist and motoring public.

What’s your favorite restaurant in Tampa? I enjoy going to Kura Revolving Sushi Bar in Westshore Mall. They have really good food.

What’s your favorite movie? I like all the Marvel and DC movies. Brings me back to my younger years when I used to read the comic books.

What do you like to do in your free time? Playing with my puppy and spending time with the family.
