As one of downtown Tampa's most popular corridors, a section of North Morgan Street received a series of safety improvements like a new pedestrian refuge, reduced speed limit, new ”sharrow” markings, an all-way stop sign, and more.

Florida Conversations: Tampa’s Soulwalk

On October 17 at 6:30pm, Fred Hearns, Tampa Bay History Center Curator of Black History, and Robin Nigh, Arts and Cultural Affairs Manager for the City of Tampa, will join a distinguished guest panel that designed the Soulwalk (http://tampa.gov/soulwalk) arts and heritage “trail.” Special guests include Nneka Jones, artist and creative director for Art You Hungry; Cheryl Rodriguez, Ph.D., with USF’s School of Interdisciplinary Global Studies; and Ida Walker, with the Tampa Police Department. Tonia Hightower

Meet Tonia Hightower, an Office Support Specialist III in the Neighborhood & Community Affairs Division. She has worked for the City of Tampa for almost 25 years and loves that her role allows her to help others, but internal and external customers.

What do you like to do in your free time? Working out is something I really enjoy. Also, I thoroughly enjoy cooking, baking, creating recipes, etc. Watching old movies is always relaxing. I cannot go without saying I enjoy going on dates with my daughter, Cheeks

What’s your favorite movie? Mahogany (1975), starring Diana Ross, Billy D Williams, and Anthony Perkins is my favorite movie to watch. It’s a story about determination…following your dreams and heart; living your dream while holding on to the love of your life.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Growing up, I had thoughts of becoming an interior designer. I love creating looks.

If money and time were no object, what would you be doing right now? If I had the time, I would volunteer more at the Children’s Hospital & Children’s Cancer Center. I would also love to travel the regions of Africa.

What is your favorite meal to cook and why? While cooking is a passion of mine, there are many. To choose one would have to be my ‘Meatballs’ and Spaghetti (the meatballs are the star of the show). Not only are they incredible, they become two meals in one. First meatballs and spaghetti, then spectacular meatball subs.
