The City of Tampa recently honored the 65th Anniversary of the Woolworth Sit-In, when students from Middleton and Blake High Schools peacefully protested segregation by sitting at the lunch counter at the Woolworth store. Their actions helped lead the way for equality and progress in Tampa and played a pivotal role in the civil rights movement. Mayor Jane Castor presented sit-in participants with a proclamation of March 1, 2025 as “Woolworth Sit-In Anniversary Day” in the City of Tampa.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Meet Nick Bennett, a Project Coordinator in the Community Redevelopment Area Division. He has worked for the City of Tampa for one year and he enjoys that the nature of redevelopment work touches every aspect of community building and betterment. He said, “My favorite part about my role has been how much I’ve learned from managing comprehensive projects for the CRA with the City’s best.”

What do you like to do in your free time? I’m a big foodie, so I’m always looking for good food here in Florida. That, live music, the theater, and working out.

What is your favorite meal to cook? I like mornings where I cook spam, eggs, rice, diced tomato. It’s a comfort food that reminds me of my mom and home.

What is your dream vacation? Europe, but by train specifically for the views. One of those cool luxury cabins-suites, with stop/go along the main destinations along the route between Rome and Paris.

What reality show would you want to be on? Pimp My Ride. I want Xzibit to install a George Foreman grill into my VW.

What’s your favorite place or restaurant in Tampa? Restaurant: My favorite in town is probably Donatello’s Italian or Craft Tampa (the boat). Shopping: I’m a sucker for the Tampa outlets and a HomeGoods haul. I enjoy outdoor weekend markets as well (St Pete Pier, Krate, etc.).
