EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Meet Ashley Whiting, a Theatre Leader III in the Parks and Recreation Department. She has worked for the City of Tampa for five years. Ashley takes any opportunity to dress up, and once came to work as a full-fledged pirate – mustache and all. She has grown tremendously as a costume, set, and sound designer, and has even had the opportunity to direct last season's production of The Magic Fish.
What’s something unique about your job that others wouldn’t know? During the 2 first years of COVID-19, the Creative Arts Theatre produced virtual shows, theatre arts lessons and activities that can be found on the City of Tampa's Parks & Recreation YouTube page. I went to film school. So, I had a blast using my screenwriting degree and film production experience at my government theatre job.
What do you like to do in your free time? In my free time, I perform in musicals at local professional theatres, take dance classes (tap is my favorite), and eat at restaurants in St. Pete, where I live.
What’s your favorite restaurant in Tampa? Spaddy's Coffee Co. on N Florida Avenue has the best hot oat milk lattes and Cuban cheese toast.
What's your favorite meal to cook? I don't cook as much as I used to, but once I learned I have some Scandinavian heritage, I've started making Swedish saffron buns annually.
What is your dream vacation? One day, I'll take a trip to Australia and New Zealand. I'm a big fan of both countries' cinema and comedy style. It would be fun to visit the sites where Picnic at Hanging Rock and What We Do in the Shadows were filmed.
What’s your favorite holiday? Halloween! I enjoy being scared and dressing up in costume. My boyfriend and I tend to do couple's costumes. The one year we didn't, I was taro bubble tea and nobody got it. I can't let that happen again!
SPECIAL FEATURE
Did you know that the City of Tampa Wastewater Department conducts tests around-the-clock in every stage in the advanced treatment process? The 50 million gallons of wastewater that are treated daily at the Howard F. Curren Treatment Plant meet or exceed the highest standards established by state & federal regulations.
This Women’s History Month, Mayor Jane Castor & the City of Tampa are honoring women succeeding in traditionally male-dominated industries, like Solid Waste and Environmental Program Management. Meet our Solid Waste "Fabulous Five":
* Richele Jenkins: Tampa’s first woman automated side loader driver. She operates trucks with mechanical arms that lift and empty trash bins.
* Trekina Hall: A committed driver keeping Tampa's waste collection system running smoothly.
* Christine Matthews: A tractor-trailer and special equipment operator at the McKay Bay Transfer Station.
* Emani Johnson and TaNesha Jones: Service attendants who play a critical role in ensuring efficiency.
The Tampa Convention Center is proud to announce its prestigious LEED Silver Award status for Operations and Maintenance (O+M) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. As a LEED building, the facility saves money, improves efficiency, lowers carbon emissions, and creates healthier places for City of Tampa residents and visitors.
